About UBC Jump Start, the smart start to life at UBC

August 18–August 31, 2010

UBC Jump Start is a pre-session transition program for new international students at UBC- Vancouver.  It is an opportunity for students to focus on the development of transferable skills that will offset cultural and language barriers that hinder academic success.  In addition, students will be asked to explore critical issues through workshops, lectures, cultural & social programming, online and team assignments to start to develop and/or enhance effective leadership skills for university, community and international arenas.  This is the sixth year of the program.

The UBC Jump Start curriculum provides a supportive education program that prepares students for academic success at university through formal curricular programming, experiential co-curricular programming and the creation of strong peer networks.

The Academic curricular programming supports targeted skill development in specific areas of study:

1.    Contact with faculty members and staff and enhancement of critical thinking and participation in a North American academic context.
2.    The program is guided by the faculty steering committee.
3.    The UBC Jump Start coordinator develops the curricular program.
4.    A cooperative learning environment is created that includes formal lectures, academic workshops led by university level lecturers, discipline specific tutorials, and guest lectures who will be supported by web and educational technologies and student leaders involved in the program.

The social and cultural co-curricular programming includes a wide range of special training workshops and non-formal experiential education. Its focus is creating:

1.    Balanced self-management of engagement in student life that promotes and strengthens academic success.
2.    Fostering UBC community involvement and volunteer efforts in campus life.
3.    Encouraging student engagement through leadership in the university and long-term academic career planning.
